Unicode Bangla is built in enabled. No need to configure anything.

Configuring Windows XP

Go to Control Panel > Regional and Language Options
In the Language tab, select Install files for complex script and right-to-left languages (including Thai)
You need Windows Xp CD to complete installing of the necessary system files.
Restart the computer if it want.
If you lost your windows cd then you need Complex Script Installer. Click here to download Complex Script Installer 2.0.0.

Configuring Windows 2000

Go to Control Panel > Regional Options
In the General tab look for Language settings for the system
Select Indic from the list. Click Ok. You have done configuring!
You might need Windows Xp CD to complete installing of the necessary system files.
Restart the computer if it want.

Configuring Windows 2003 Server

Go to Control Panel > Regional and Language Options
In Language tab select Install files for complex script and right-to-left languages (including Thai). Click Ok.

LINUX

Linux with Gnome Desktop

No need to configure anything. Only download unicode Bangla fonts and install it.
When using Mozilla or Firefox, you must enable Pango rendering by opening xterm and typing MOZ_ENABLE_PANGO=1 mozilla or MOZ_ENABLE_PANGO=1 firefox.
Now your browser have Bangla language support. (Make sure you have firefox 2.o or recent version. Older version don't support Unicode Bangla)

Linux with KDE Desktop

* No need to configure anything. Only download unicode Bangla fonts and install it.
* Make sure to support Bangla when install Linux.

INTERNET EXPLORER

Tools menu > Internet Options.
On General Tab click Fonts below.
From drop down list for Language Script. Select Bengali.
Select your prefered unicode font. Click Ok.
Go to your browser’s “view” menu and set the “character encoding” or “encoding” feature to: Unicode (UTF-8).

MOZILLA FIREFOX

Point to Tools > Options.
On Options window, click Contents Tab.
Click Advanced just right of Fonts & Colors.
Select Bengali on the drop down list of Fonts For. Select any unicode Bangla font for 'serif', 'sans-serif' and 'monospace'. 'proportional' will stayed as default (serif).
Click Ok.
Go to your browser’s “view” menu and set the “character encoding” or “encoding” feature to: Unicode (UTF-8).

OPERA

Point to Tools > preference > General > Details click on Add.
Select Bangla.
Now point to "Advanced" tab and choose "Fonts" on the left pan. Then find the "International Font" button and click on that.
In Writing System choose Bengali and Normal font. Choice your prefered unicode Bangla font from the list.
Click Ok.
Now you will be able to view Bangla in Opera Browser.

----------- For Newer Version

Go to Tools > Prefereces > Advanced tab > Fonts>International fonts>choose Bengali from drop down list.
Select Bengali font of your choice. In most of cases, opera automatically detects your support for unicode once you have it in operating systems and installed fonts.
Go to your browser’s view menu and set the character encoding or encoding feature to: Unicode (UTF-8).

How to install Unicode Bangla fonts in Windows

The easiest method is -

Copy all fonts and Paste them into windows > font folder.
or
Click Fonts on Control panel.
Click 'Install new fonts' from file menu > select your fonts folder > select all >
Click Ok.

How to install Unicode Bangla fonts in Ubuntu?

Click on 'Places' in upside menu.
Go to 'Home folder'.
Make a folder and named it .fonts (a single dot befor name 'fonts'. (It is a hidden folder.)
Paste unicode Bangla fonts on '.fonts' folder.
Restart computer, now your installed fonts are active.

Typing Phonetic Bangla is Very Easy
Type as you pronounce the word with English letter.
Ami, Tumi, Amar, Rastro, Mukhosh, Bangladesh etc.
Right the complex word with + (Plus) sign.
ras+t+ro, mos+To, aor+ko
Remember that phonetic typing is case sensitive.

How to write Bangla in Ubuntu Linux?

Go to System>Administration>Synaptic Package manager
Give password
In search box write 'm17n'. On result select 'm17n-db' and 'scim-m17n'. Mark them to install (Left click on the name and select 'mark for install'), Now click 'Apply'. Synaptic Package Manage will install this 2 package.
Now go to System> Preferences> SCIM Inpute Method Setup
In 'SCIM Inpute Method Setup' window, Select 'Global Setup' and click on 'Disable All'
Now mark only 'bn-unijoy' click 'Apply' and 'OK'
Restart computer. 'SCIM Inpute Method Setup' will start automaticaly on next login
Open any text editor press 'Alt+Spacebar' at same time. Your computer is ready to write unicode Bangla.
Write in 'Unijoy Bangla' keyboard mode in your Ubuntu Linux.
You may select 'Bengali-bn-unijoy' manualy by mouse on the right side of upper menu.
A popup window will open when you change key board layout between English and Bangla

Download Bangla packages for Ubuntu (Updated 09 july 2009. Size: 2.6 MB). You can find everything you need to write Bangla in Ubuntu (any version). Unzip the archive file into a folder. Double click all the .deb files. After install all the files restart your computer.

You can try a tiny software called Font Fixer1.0.5 to change default Bangla (Bengali) font of your windows. It will change the default Bangla font as your desire. It is Freeware.

Go to Display Properties
on Appearance tab click Effects button.
Look at the text -"Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts".
Just below this line select Clear type from drop down menu.

How to Write Unicode Bangla in Puppy Linux

Extract this PuppySoft package in a folder

This package contain five (05) file
1. m17n-db-1.5.1-i486.pet

Restart your computer (Restart X Server from shutdown menu)
When you start a text editor (Leafpad, Geany or Abiword), rightclick anywhere in the page and select SCIM input system.
SCIM will start.
It is viewable at the right side of statasbar.
Right click on it. Start SCIM setup.
On 'Global setup' 'Disable all'.
Mark only 'bn-unijoy'.
Click 'Apply' and 'Ok'
Restart your computer (Restart X Server from shutdown menu).
Your Puppy Linux System is ready to write unicode Bangla.

Paste your favotite fonts in usr\share\fonts folder. (Select and drug is the easiest way in Puppy Linux to copy anything). Install Bijoy fonts in this folder in same way. You can view any document (*.doc) files written in Windows by Bijoy.

'usr' folder is hidden. To view this folder click on the 'eye' icon on menu bar.
Restart X Server from shutdown menu.
Now you can able to view Bangla in Puppy Linux.

Help on Win 95, 98, ME & NT

If you are still using these operating system (Windows 95, 98, ME and NT), then we are sorry.

These operating systems don't have support for Bangla scripts.

But if you use Internet Explorer 6.0, Opera (9 or later) or Mozilla Firefox (2.0 or later) it will help you to view Bangla scripts on Win 95, Win 98, Win ME or Win NT.

But you won't be able to edit any Bangla text.

After downloading the appropriate browser if you still failed to view Indic scripts properly, please install Unicode Bangla font.

That means when you have limited access to some PC and do not have permission to install anything including fonts, this tool will be very handy then.

Instruction
# Just download and run.

# The application will extract ‘Likhan’ font to the same folder for the first time and virtually Install the font; It also set the ‘Likhan’ as your default Bangla locale font for IE (Internet Exorer). A ‘Icon’ will be added to the ’systray’ of your system.

In computing, Unicode is an industry standard allowing computers to consistently represent and manipulate text expressed in most of the world's writing systems. Developed in tandem with the Universal Character Set standard and published in book form as The Unicode Standard, Unicode consists of a repertoire of more than 100,000 characters, a set of code charts for visual reference, an encoding methodology and set of standard character encodings, an enumeration of character properties such as upper and lower case, a set of reference data computer files, and a number of related items, such as character properties, rules for normalization, decomposition, collation, rendering and bidirectional display order (for the correct display of text containing both right-to-left scripts, such as Arabic or Hebrew, and left-to-right scripts).

The Unicode Consortium, the non-profit organization that coordinates Unicode's development, has the ambitious goal of eventually replacing existing character encoding schemes with Unicode and its standard Unicode Transformation Format (UTF) schemes, as many of the existing schemes are limited in size and scope and are incompatible with multilingual environments.

Unicode's success at unifying character sets has led to its widespread and predominant use in the internationalization and localization of computer software. The standard has been implemented in many recent technologies, including XML, the Java programming language, the Microsoft .NET Framework and modern operating systems.

Unicode can be implemented by different character encodings. The most commonly used encodings are UTF-8 (which uses 1 byte for all ASCII characters, which have the same code values as in the standard ASCII encoding, and up to 4 bytes for other characters), the now-obsolete UCS-2 (which uses 2 bytes for all characters, but does not include every character in the Unicode standard), and UTF-16 (which extends UCS-2, using 4 bytes to encode characters missing from UCS-2).

Origin and development

Unicode has the explicit aim of transcending the limitations of traditional character encodings, such as those defined by the ISO 8859 standard, which find wide usage in various countries of the world but remain largely incompatible with each other. Many traditional character encodings share a common problem in that they allow bilingual computer processing (usually using Roman characters and the local script) but not multilingual computer processing (computer processing of arbitrary scripts mixed with each other).

Unicode, in intent, encodes the underlying characters — graphemes and grapheme-like units — rather than the variant glyphs (renderings) for such characters. In the case of Chinese characters, this sometimes leads to controversies over distinguishing the underlying character from its variant glyphs (see Han unification).

In text processing, Unicode takes the role of providing a unique code point — a number, not a glyph — for each character. In other words, Unicode represents a character in an abstract way and leaves the visual rendering (size, shape, font or style) to other software, such as a web browser or word processor. This simple aim becomes complicated, however, by concessions made by Unicode's designers in the hope of encouraging a more rapid adoption of Unicode.

The first 256 code points were made identical to the content of ISO 8859-1 so as to make it trivial to convert existing western text. Many essentially identical characters were encoded multiple times at different code points to preserve distinctions used by legacy encodings and therefore allow conversion from those encodings to Unicode (and back) without losing any information. For example, the "fullwidth forms" section of code points encompasses a full Latin alphabet that is separate from the main Latin alphabet section. In Chinese, Japanese and Korean (CJK) fonts, these characters are rendered at the same width as CJK ideographs rather than at half the width. For other examples, see Duplicate characters in Unicode.

History of Unicode

The origins of Unicode date back to 1987 when Joe Becker from Xerox and Lee Collins and Mark Davis from Apple started investigating the practicalities of creating a universal character set. In August of the following year Joe Becker published a draft proposal for an "international/multilingual text character encoding system, tentatively called Unicode." In this document, entitled Unicode 88, he outlined a 16 bit character model:

Unicode is intended to address the need for a workable, reliable world text encoding. Unicode could be roughly described as "wide-body ASCII" that has been stretched to 16 bits to encompass the characters of all the world's living languages. In a properly engineered design, 16 bits per character are more than sufficient for this purpose.

His original 16 bit design was based on the assumption that only those scripts and characters in modern usage would need to be encoded:

Unicode gives higher priority to ensuring utility for the future than to preserving past antiquities. Unicode aims in the first instance at the characters published in modern text (e.g. in the union of all newspapers and magazines printed in the world in 1988), whose number is undoubtedly far below 214 = 16,384. Beyond those modern-use characters, all others may be defined to be obsolete or rare; these are better candidates for private-use registration than for congesting the public list of generally-useful Unicodes.

In fact this proved not to be the case, as many historic scripts and thousands of rarely-used or obsolete characters have now been encoded in Unicode, and work continues to encode even more historic scripts that it was never anticpated would need to be encoded (e.g. Egyptian Hieroglyphics).

In early 1989 the Unicode working group expanded to include Ken Whistler and Mike Kernaghan of Metaphor, Karen Smith-Yoshimura and Joan Aliprand of RLG, and Glenn Wright of Sun Microsystems, and in 1990 Michel Suignard and Asmus Freytag from Microsoft and Rick McGowan of NeXT joined the group. By the end of 1990 most of the work on mapping existing character encoding standards had been completed, and a final review draft of Unicode was ready. The Unicode consortium was incorporated on January 3, 1991 in the state of California, and in October 1991 the first volume of the Unicode standard was published. The second volume, covering Han ideographs, was published in June 1992.

The following transliteration scheme for IPA in ASCII/ISO 646 printable character repertoire, Extended Speech Assessment Methods Phonetic Alphabet, as used in fifth columns, and the scheme for the Bangla text, ISO 15919, as used in the third columns, have been used in all the pages of the site unless the text is in the International Phonetic Alphabet proper or in the Bangla script.

The Bengali script (also known as Bangla) is used for the Bengali language, which belongs to the Indo-Aryan group and is the national language of Bangladesh; it is also spoken by the majority of the population of the Indian State of West Bengal. The Bengali script is also used for Assamese, the Indo-Aryan language of the Indian State of Assam. You can see some Unicode Bengali on the What is Unicode? in Bangla page.

Support for Bengali Unicode in Windows was introduced in 2004 with Windows XP SP2. Looking around at some UTF-8 background, I see the same incorrect
story being repeated over and over. The incorrect version is:
1. IBM designed UTF-8.
2. Plan 9 implemented it.
That's not true. UTF-8 was designed, in front of my eyes, on a
placemat in a New Jersey diner one night in September or so 1992.

What happened was this. We had used the original UTF from ISO 10646
to make Plan 9 support 16-bit characters, but we hated it. We were
close to shipping the system when, late one afternoon, I received a
call from some folks, I think at IBM - I remember them being in Austin
- who were in an X/Open committee meeting. They wanted Ken and me to
vet their FSS/UTF design. We understood why they were introducing a
new design, and Ken and I suddenly realized there was an opportunity
to use our experience to design a really good standard and get the
X/Open guys to push it out. We suggested this and the deal was, if we
could do it fast, OK. So we went to dinner, Ken figured out the
bit-packing, and when we came back to the lab after dinner we called
the X/Open guys and explained our scheme. We mailed them an outline
of our spec, and they replied saying that it was better than theirs (I
don't believe I ever actually saw their proposal; I know I don't
remember it) and how fast could we implement it? I think this was a
Wednesday night and we promised a complete running system by Monday,
which I think was when their big vote was.

So that night Ken wrote packing and unpacking code and I started
tearing into the C and graphics libraries. The next day all the code
was done and we started converting the text files on the system
itself. By Friday some time Plan 9 was running, and only running,
what would be called UTF-8. We called X/Open and the rest, as they
say, is slightly rewritten history.

Why didn't we just use their FSS/UTF? As I remember, it was because
in that first phone call I sang out a list of desiderata for any such
encoding, and FSS/UTF was lacking at least one - the ability to
synchronize a byte stream picked up mid-run, with less that one
character being consumed before synchronization. Becuase that was
lacking, we felt free - and were given freedom - to roll our own.

I think the "IBM designed it, Plan 9 implemented it" story originates
in RFC2279. At the time, we were so happy UTF-8 was catching on we
didn't say anything about the bungled history. Neither of us is at
the Labs any more, but I bet there's an e-mail thread in the archive
there that would support our story and I might be able to get someone
to dig it out.

So, full kudos to the X/Open and IBM folks for making the opportunity
happen and for pushing it forward, but Ken designed it with me
cheering him on, whatever the history books say.

I asked Russ Cox to dig through the archives. I have attached his message.
I think you'll agree it supports the story I sent earlier. The mail we
sent to X/Open (I believe Ken did the editing and mailing of that document)
includes a new desideratum #6 about discovering character boundaries.
We'll never know how much the original X/Open proposal influenced us;
the two proposals are very different but do share some characteristics.
I don't remember looking at it in detail, but it was a long time ago.
I very clearly remember Ken writing on the placemat and wished we had
kept it!

is dated 19:51:55. it was commented

until nov 14 1996, when runelen was sped up by
inspecting the rune explicitly rather than
using runetochar's return value. may 26 2001
was the next and last change, to add runenlen.

here are some mails from your mail boxes
that turn up by grepping for utf. the first
refers to utf.c, which is a copy of a wctomb and mbtowc
that handle the full 6-byte utf-8 encoding of 32-bit runes.
it's quite ugly, with all the logic in control flow.
i assume it became the code in the proposal
as a result of that first mail.

in /usr/ken/utf/xutf i found a copy of what
appears to be the original not-self-synchronizing
encoding proposal, with the utf-8 scheme tacked
onto the end (starting at "We define 7 byte types").
that's also below. the version below is the first,
dated sep 2 23:44:10. it went through a number of
edits to become the second mail below by the
morning of Sep 8.

the UCS standard with existing programming languages and existing

The challenges of the programming languages and the UCS standard are
being dealt with by other activities in the industry. However, we are
still faced with the handling of UCS by historical operating systems
and utilities. Prominent among the operating system UCS handling
concerns is the representation of the data within the file system. An
underlying assumption is that there is an absolute requirement to
maintain the existing operating system software investment while at
the same time taking advantage of the use the large number of
characters provided by the UCS.

UCS provides the capability to encode multi-lingual text within a
single coded character set. However, UCS and its UTF variant do not

Proposed FSS-UTF

The proposed UCS transformation format encodes UCS values in the range
[0,0x7fffffff] using multibyte characters of lengths 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,
and 6 bytes. For all encodings of more than one byte, the initial
byte determines the number of bytes used and the high-order bit in
each byte is set. Every byte that does not start 10xxxxxx is the
start of a UCS character sequence.

An easy way to remember this transformation format is to note that the
number of high-order 1's in the first byte signifies the number of
bytes in the multibyte character:

The UCS value is just the concatenation of the v bits in the multibyte
encoding. When there are multiple ways to encode a value, for example
UCS 0, only the shortest encoding is legal.

The bits included in the byte sequence is biased by the minimum value
so that if all the z's, y's, x's, w's, and v's are zero, the minimum
value is represented. In the byte sequences, the lowest-order encoded
bits are in the last byte; the high-order bits (the z's) are in the
first byte.

This transformation format uses the byte values in the entire range of
0x80 to 0xff, inclusive, as part of multibyte sequences. Given the
assumption that at most there are seven (7) useful bits per byte, this
transformation format is close to minimal in its number of bytes used.

Some notes:

1. The 2 byte sequence has 2^11 codes, yet only 2^11-2^7
are allowed. The codes in the range 0-7f are illegal.
I think this is preferable to a pile of magic additive
constants for no real benefit. Similar comment applies
to all of the longer sequences.

2. The 4, 5, and 6 byte sequences are only there for
political reasons. I would prefer to delete these.

3. The 6 byte sequence covers 32 bits, the FSS-UTF
proposal only covers 31.

4. All of the sequences synchronize on any byte that is
not a Tx byte.

Unicode provides a unique number for every character,

no matter what the platform,
no matter what the program,
no matter what the language.

Fundamentally, computers just deal with numbers. They store letters and other characters by assigning a number for each one. Before Unicode was invented, there were hundreds of different encoding systems for assigning these numbers. No single encoding could contain enough characters: for example, the European Union alone requires several different encodings to cover all its languages. Even for a single language like English no single encoding was adequate for all the letters, punctuation, and technical symbols in common use.

These encoding systems also conflict with one another. That is, two encodings can use the same number for two different characters, or use different numbers for the same character. Any given computer (especially servers) needs to support many different encodings; yet whenever data is passed between different encodings or platforms, that data always runs the risk of corruption.
Unicode is changing all that!

Unicode provides a unique number for every character, no matter what the platform, no matter what the program, no matter what the language. The Unicode Standard has been adopted by such industry leaders as Apple, HP, IBM, JustSystems, Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, Sun, Sybase, Unisys and many others. Unicode is required by modern standards such as XML, Java, ECMAScript (JavaScript), LDAP, CORBA 3.0, WML, etc., and is the official way to implement ISO/IEC 10646. It is supported in many operating systems, all modern browsers, and many other products. The emergence of the Unicode Standard, and the availability of tools supporting it, are among the most significant recent global software technology trends.

Incorporating Unicode into client-server or multi-tiered applications and websites offers significant cost savings over the use of legacy character sets. Unicode enables a single software product or a single website to be targeted across multiple platforms, languages and countries without re-engineering. It allows data to be transported through many different systems without corruption.

Go to 'opera' website and download 'opera mini'.
Install it in mobile phone.
Now it's time to configure your 'opera mini'.
In address bar (Enter web address) write 'about:config' or 'opera:config' and press 'OK'.

How to install Unicode Bangla font in Ubuntu Linux?

Click on 'Places' in Upside on desktop. Go to 'Home folder'. Make a folder and named it .fonts (a single dot befor name 'fonts'). Download the 'Unicode Bangla font package'. Extract it into or copy and paste unicode Bangla fonts on '.fonts' folder. Restart computer, now your installed fonts are active.

If you install Bijoy fonts in this method you can view any *.doc files written in Windows by Bijoy software.
