The sounds of Bengali

The following transliteration scheme for IPA in ASCII/ISO 646 printable character repertoire, Extended Speech Assessment Methods Phonetic Alphabet, as used in fifth columns, and the scheme for the Bangla text, ISO 15919, as used in the third columns, have been used in all the pages of the site unless the text is in the International Phonetic Alphabet proper or in the Bangla script.

The standard Bangla sound system is considered a set of 45 phonemes: 8 plosives (/p b t d ʈ ɖ k ɡ/), 2 affricates (/cʃ ɟʒ/), 1 flap (/ɽ/), 11 aspirates (/pʰ bʱ t̪ʰ d̪ʱ ʈʰ ɖʱ kʰ ɡʱ cʃʰ ɟʒʱ ɽʱ/), 3 nasals (/m n ŋ/), 2 fricatives (/ʃ ɦ/), 1 roll or trill (/r/), 1 lateral (/l/), 2 approximants (/ĕ ŏ/), 7 oral vowels (/i e æ ɑ ɔ o u/), and 7 nasal vowels (/ɪ̃ ẽ æ̃ ɑ̃ ɔ̃ õ ũ/).
